About Us

Our department has thirteen full-time faculty members, twelve staff members, eighty six undergraduate students (sophomores, juniors, and seniors), thirty one students enrolled in the M. Tech (Design & Manufacturing) program, ten students enrolled in the MS program, and sixteen students enrolled in the PhD program. The department houses the central workshop and several state-of-the-art instructional and research laboratories. Our faculty are actively engaged in teaching, research, and consultancy projects. Our areas of research cover both traditional and emerging fields, and include combinations of theoretical modelling, experiments, and computational analyses. Our faculty also colloborate extensively with colleagues and peers in other national and international institutions and research organizations. Our department's research expenditures are in the excess of sixty million INR, and our faculty have been successful in obtaining externally-sponsored research grants such as the Early Career Research Award (ECRA), Start-up Research Grant (SRG), Core Research Grant (CRG), and grants for projects which are part of the Impacting Research, Innovation and Technology (IMPRINT) initiative. Our research projects are funded by grants from Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB), Department of Science & technology (DST), Naval Research Board (NRB), and other governmental and non-governmental organizations. The department also takes teaching seriously, and our faculty are constantly in the process of updating the undergraduate and graduate curriculum and syllabus by factoring in recent trends and the needs of relevant industries.

Programs of Study Offered by the Department

M. Tech in Design and Manufacturing

The four-semester Master of Technology (M. Tech) program in Design and Manufacturing was launched at the beginning of the academic year 2018-19. The curriculum has been designed after factoring in various aspects including recent trends in the industry and corporate sector, and with an aim of equipping our students with the necessary skills and knowledge for successful careers in their chosen fields. The students are encouraged to carry out internships and/or their final-year projects at organizations such as Central Manufacturing Technology Institute (CMTI) Bangalore. The first batch of twenty one students graduated in June 2020. The department also launched a four-semester M. Tech program with an emphasis on Robotics, tailor-made for officers of the Indian Army beginning from the academic year 2020-21.

M. Tech in Design and Manufacturing

The Master of Science (MS) degree program in Mechanical Engineering was launched in July 2017. The distinguishing features of this program include a flexible timeline and curriculum. Students are required to work closely with an advisor of their choice, and perform guided research leading to a thesis. The advisors encourage their students to attend workshops, symposiums, research conclaves, and to present their work at conferences in their respective fields. At times, expenses for such activities might be covered from grants secured by the faculty or from the department/institute budget. After graduating with the MS degree, some students opt to follow up with a PhD in reputed institutions within the country or abroad, while others choose to move to the corporate world, with the intention of applying their research skills to solve problems in the industry.

PhD in Mechanical Engineering

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Mechanical Engineering, started in Jan 2018, is a terminal degree program offered by the department. The three major fields of study within the department are Fluid & Thermal Sciences; Solid Mechanics & Design; and Manufacturing. The elements of the PhD program include a strong emphasis on research leading to a dissertation, and a flexible curriculum of courses relevant to the area of study/research, chosen by the student in consultation with the advisor. Students work closely with an advisor on a mutually agreed research problem for a duration ranging from three to six years, which often results in one or more refereed journal publications. Students are also encouraged to attend workshops, symposiums, research conclaves, and to present their work at conferences in their respective fields. At times, expenses for such activities might be covered from grants secured by the faculty or from the department/institute budget. Upon graduating with a PhD degree, students may choose to join reputed organizations/laboratories in the world to gain postdoctoral research experience. A good number of our students are expected to end up as faculty members in academic institutions. Some students may prefer to work at research laboratories as scientists, while others may shift to the industry to work on interesting problems.

History of the Department

The Indian Institute of Technology at Tirupati was established in the year 2015 by the Ministry of Human Resourses and Development, Government of India. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Tirupati is as old as the institute itself. The Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) program commenced in 2015 with an enrolment of 30 students. Lectures were conducted with the help of faculty members from our mentor institute, IIT Madras. In the following year, a few faculty members were hired on a temporary basis to work for the department. The institute started scouting for permanent faculty members in 2017, and subsequent to an advertised recruitment drive in Spring 2017, a couple of people were roped in. Recognizing the need to initiate research activities, the Master of Science (by Research) program, abbreviated as MS, was launched in July 2017. By the end of 2017, the department had seven faculty members, four students enrolled in the MS program, and about eighty students enrolled in the B. Tech program.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program was launched in Jan 2018, and at the end of a rigorous selection process, two students were chosen to pursue their PhD in Mechanical Engineering. The first set of undergraduate students, the Class of 2015, graduated at the end of Spring 2019, and their degrees were awarded during the first convocation of the instute, held on 13 Aug 2019, and graced by the union minister for Human Resource and Development. In Fall 2018, the department also launched a Master of Technology (M. Tech) program with sepecialization in Design and Manufacturing. At present, the department comprises thirteen full-time faculty members, and twelve full-time staff members including junior technicians, junior technical superindents. and an administrative assistant. The Mechanical Engineering Department is also home to the institute's Central Workshop.
